The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
