Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
However, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given physical binders of materials that contained no previously unseen data.
