European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
