Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
